David Jones: Sexual Harassment
In the David Jones incident, an employee alleged that the then-CEO had made unwelcome sexual advances towards her and claimed the department store had tolerated the CEO’s continuing sexual conduct. The employee launched a 37 million dollar lawsuit in the federal court and made a complaint in the Australian Human Rights Commission against the department store, the CEO and nine Directors. The CEO subsequently resigned from his position saying he had behaved “in a manner unbecoming of a chief executive to a female staff member”. The case was eventually settled for 850,000 dollars after a sea of media attention.
